How to Find Your Perfect Sheet Size

Ever bought a fitted sheet that just wouldn’t fit? Or one that keeps popping off the bed, no matter how tightly you tuck it?

Fortunately, these problems are easily solved. It all starts with understanding what size mattress you have. From there, you can choose sheets that match your mattress size (and depth!) to ensure a perfect, snug fit.

First thing’s first, use the chart below to identify the size of your mattress!

Standard Mattress Sizes in Canada

While there are several other styles of beds and mattresses, these are the most common sizes you'll find when shopping for beds and sheets in Canada.

What’s the difference between Twin and Twin XL?

Twin and Twin XL beds are both about 39” wide, but Twin XL beds are usually about 5 inches longer than regular Twin beds. Twin XL beds are often used in dorm rooms and hostels, since the extra length offers more legroom for fully grown sleepers. This difference is also the same for Double and Double XL beds, though these are generally less common.

What’s the difference between King, Super King, and California King?

These three sizes are all quite similar, but each have their own unique measurements. King beds are 78" wide and 80" long, making them close to a perfect square. California King beds are slightly more rectangular, being around 72” wide and 84” long. This makes California King beds extra comfortable for tall sleepers, but are much less common since most sleepers don’t need that much legroom.

Here at QE Home, we also have a specialty size called Super King that measures 114” wide by 93” long. Rather than a sheeting or bed size, this is instead an extra large size for duvets, duvet covers, quilts, and other bedding layers. This size is ideal if your mattress is over 16” in depth, if you want your bedding to fully drape over the sides of your bed, or if you share a bed and find yourself fighting over blankets!

What are Split King sheets?

Rather than having a single mattress, Split King beds include two matching mattresses that rest next to each other, which are each about the size of a Twin XL mattress. These are great for sleepers who share a bed, but might have different sleep needs that might not be comfortable for both sleepers (such as an inclined mattress).

Rather than including a single fitted sheet, Split King sheets typically include two matching fitted sheets, alongside a flat sheet and pillowcase(s) for a King bed.

Matching Your Mattress Size to Your Sheets

Once you’ve measured your mattress and determined its size, you may think it’s a simple matter of buying the corresponding sheets. But there are a few more factors to take into consideration…

Mattress Depth

Some mattresses may be much deeper than others, which can potentially make them too large for certain fitted sheets. Our fitted sheets come in different depths based on which fabric you go with, so it’s just as important to measure this part of your mattress before looking for new sheets.

To determine what fitted sheet will best fit your bed, measure the depth of your mattress from top to bottom.

It’s best to take this measurement using a corner of your mattress, and not in the middle or at the foot of the bed. Depending on the age of your mattress and whether you sit on it often, it may be slightly sunken along the sides or at the foot!

We recommend taking the measuring tape a little bit under the corner of your mattress to account for the fitted sheet and allow some wiggle room.

Mattress depth is generally categorized as follows:

• Standard mattress: 7 to 12 inches high
• Deep mattress: 13 to 17 inches high
• Extra deep mattress: 15 to 18 inches high

What is STAY SNUG™ Technology?

This allows the fitted sheet to hug and grip onto the mattress more effectively, keeping it from coming off from the mattress while you sleep. 

This also helps them fit more tightly on mattresses with different depths or sizes, meaning your fitted sheet will still fit even if your mattress is a few inches smaller than average.

Mattress Toppers

Do you love using an extra cushiony mattress topper? Don’t forget to factor this in when taking your measurements! A topper will add to the overall depth of your mattress. Moral of the story: be sure to take any extra layers into consideration when choosing your fitted sheet.

 
Washing Your Sheets

We recommend washing your sheets before first use! Always wash your sheets by themselves and follow care instructions closely, and you shouldn’t experience undo shrinkage.

Some fabrics, like organic cotton, are more prone to shrinking than others. We take this into consideration when crafting our sheets by including a little extra material. So washing your new sheets before use will help ensure the best fit.

Pro-tip: Invest in multiple sheet sets and rotate them out on washing day to extend their lifespan!
