Top 10 Tips for Cool Summer Sleep

Hot Sleep, Cool Science

Many of us have trouble getting quality shut-eye in the heat of the summertime. Which begs the question: why is warmth such a pesky sleep saboteur? Well, your body temperature naturally drops as part of your sleep cycle, telling your body that it's time to wind down and get cozy. So when your environment is too hot, it can disrupt this process, making it harder to fall asleep.

By keeping your sleep sanctuary cool, you let your body fall into a natural rhythm, supporting deeper, higher quality rest during hot summer nights.

How to Sleep Cool in Summer

1. Choose natural bedding.

  • Opt for: Lightweight, moisture-wicking materials like Bamboo Cotton, Mulberry Silk, Linen, or TENCEL™ Modal that breathe with your body and help balance your temperature.
  • Avoid: Heavy or synthetic fabrics that trap heat and moisture against your skin.

2. Try a cooling blanket.

3. Don’t forget a cool & breezy mattress topper! Otherwise there’s nothing but a sheet between your hot body and your heat-retaining mattress.

4. And a cooling pillow - make both sides the ‘cool side’!

5. Adjust your sleepwear: Wear moisture-wicking or breathable loungewear before bed, and sleep in light clothing.

6. Sleep with the fan on: This helps to circulate air, keeping your room fresh and dry.

7. Block out the warmth: Use blackout curtains while you sleep to block out the light and the heat of long summer days.

8. Lower your thermostat: Set your room to 15-18°C, the sleep temp your body craves.

9. Stop moving, start breathing

  • Avoid: Intense exercise that gets the blood pumping close to bedtime.
  • Try: Meditation or yoga exercises that soothe your body and mind.

10. Shower before bed: A lukewarm or even cold shower (for the bravest of us) can help lower your core temperature and tell your body it’s time to sleep.
