Summer Fun On a Budget: Keep Kids Busy & Happy All Season
2025 May 22nd
School’s out, the sun is shining, and your kids have the zoomies! But keeping them entertained all summer long without breaking the bank? Oof. That’s tough. Luckily, there are lots of creative, affordable ways to keep your kids active, engaged, and smiling all summer long (while giving your wallet a break!)
Here are some of our favourites:
1. Explore Local Parks & Trails
Our local parks are some of the best in the world—and they’re free! No matter where you live, chances are there’s a trail, beach, or green space to explore nearby.
Whether you’re climbing for views or kicking the soccer ball around, a day in nature is just what the summer ordered. Just make sure to have an extra soapy bath afterward!
Try:
- Urban parks like High Park (Toronto), Stanley Park (Vancouver), or Parc Jean-Drapeau (Montreal)
- Provincial parks—many offer free admission days
- A local lakeside getaway - just plant your sun umbrella and watch the day slip away!
2. Water Play on Warm Days
You don’t need a pool to make a splash! Kick the kids out of the house, give them ample water toys, and beat the heat with free or low-cost water fun:
- Get wild at the local water park!
- Set up a backyard sprinkler, kiddie pool, or slip n’ slide
- Make a splash with squirt guns or water balloons
Pro tip: Leave some towels on the front porch so the kids can dry off before coming inside the house.
3. Community Events & Festivals
Many towns and cities host free family events in the summer: parades, outdoor movie nights, street fairs, and more.
How to find them:
- Check local Facebook groups or your city’s website
- Look for free admission days at museums, galleries, theatres, and zoos
- Explore your local community centre and their free or low-cost drop-in programs
Pro tip: Take a summer-perfect quilt with you so you have a cozy place to rest during the festivities.
4. Backyard Camping
No cottage? No problem! Set up a tent in the backyard, or transform your living room into a pillow fort “campground” made of plush cushions and soft blankets.
Try:
- Stargazing + glow sticks
- Campfire songs and shadow puppet theatre
- S’mores in the oven
Don’t forget a cozy throw for a night in a tent or evening around a campfire!
5. Start a Kid-Friendly Garden
A small garden in the yard teaches kids patience and responsibility—and gives them something to check on daily. Plus, there’s nothing better for you and the planet than fresh local produce! And in a couple weeks, you can enjoy a delicious salad grown in your own home.
Budget tip: Start with seeds, not plants. Lettuce, beans, and tomatoes are fast and easy wins for little hands!
Worried about dirty garden clothes? Don’t fret! We’ve got the natural laundry essentials to keep your kids’ gardening grubs squeaky clean.
Make Summer Magic—Without the Expense
Summer doesn’t need to be a constant stream of camps and travel to be memorable. With a little creativity and a lot of heart, you can fill your kids’ days with laughter, learning, and lasting memories—all without stretching your wallet.
